Acoustic Paints

If you go to Yahoo! Answers and ask about re-painting your guitar, most of the users will encourage you not to. If you do, they’ll plead with you to ensure that you get the painting done by a professional who knows how to properly handle the wooden instrument. Painting, and all of the prep work behind it, can add a completely different layer of sound to a room; it can alter it, remove certain qualities and certainly magnify others.

Acoustic guitarists know how imperative sound quality is in creating the proper ambiance: isn’t your home as important?

Not everyone is concerned about the acoustics of their room; usually musicians of some variant or another are the only ones interested in maintaining favorable acoustics. However, if you’ve ever lived in the bottom floor of an apartment complex, you understand that sound barriers certainly make a difference.

Different varieties of paint can significantly alter the sound quality of a room.  and specialized acoustic paints tend to insulate a room further and can increase the privacy available in any given room. Since Five Star Painting usually favors latex-based paints, it seems we can now offer that slight boost towards a more secure room. A fair amount of people unfortunately discount this method, referencing it as another example of the cliché “snake oil” metaphor; however, several knowledgeable sources subsequently disagree. Although it is not a substitute for full acoustic treatment, it can enhance the sound protection and to some small extent, the sound quality of a room.

Five Star Painting allows you to choose the kind of paint you’d like to use. The next time you need to paint your home, be sure to choose a latex-based paint or specialized acoustic paint if an increase in sound privacy is something you’re interested in. Give us a call 1-866-965-STAR.

How Light Affects the Color of a Room

The color of a room initiates the ambiance that you’re looking for. That being the case, it can be a little tricky to pin down the color you really want to represent certain rooms in your home. Of course there are many aspects that go into that final decision; unfortunately, a lot of people overlook one crucial aspect of that chromatic and dramatic decision.

Paint color is a pigment; pigment color is technically defined as a material that changes the wavelengths of reflected light as the result of selective absorption. Considering that, it follows the lighting schemes and other various impacts that light could have on your room.

Lighting is just as integral a setting as color when it comes to the design of a room; however, it can be extremely difficult to re-wire an entire room just for lighting. Most of us just have to work with what we’ve got. A fresh coat of paint is a seamless and easy way to brighten a room or transform it easily into that calm oasis you’ve always wanted to get away to.

You’ll also want to contemplate light placement when observing the friendship between light and color. If you want your new lovely paint job to take center stage, directly placing the walls literally in the spotlight is a good call. However, if you’d prefer your paint to be a little more humble than that, a dim lighting throughout the room can softly emphasize your intended focus.

If there are windows in the room, you’ll definitely want to take that into consideration, especially when choosing your new paint tone. You don’t want a color that washes out when the bright, beautiful sun comes streaming through your open window. On the other hand, whatever color you choose remains with you during night hours as well; you probably don’t want a color that punches you in the face when you’re alone with it and it is dark outside.

Of course, in the end, your choice in color comes down to personal taste and, perhaps, the fashion of the time. Choosing a paint color for your home or apartment can be difficult, but with the expertise Five Star Painting team on your side, anything is possible! Call us for a FREE estimate 1-866-965-STAR.

How to Avoid Roller Marks

When there are roller marks on the wall, it is from the unintentional textured pattern left in the paint by the roller. This can happen from using the roller incorrectly or having the wrong roller cover. This is what it can look like:

The following are appropriate roller cover types and nap sizes to use for specific paints:

  • Latex paints use synthetic fiber covers
  • Alkyd/oil paints use lambs’ wool, mohair, or other natural fiber covers.
  • Smooth surfaces: flats and satins use 3/8″ covers; semi-gloss and gloss use 1/4″ covers.
  • Textured surfaces: (depending on the texture) 1/2″, 3/4″, or longer.

Good quality rollers ensure adequate film thickness and uniformity. When using latex paints, pre-dampen the rollers with water and shake out any excess water. Condition the paint by soaking it in the paint for about five minutes prior to painting. Try not to let the paint build up on the ends of the rollers. Also, be sure to sand and buff out any rough areas before painting.

Starting a Business

Starting a business with nothing can be intimidating. Those who can relate to this will agree that having support helps you succeed. But, how can we succeed in the face of recession and VCs laughing at the very idea? Bootstrapping it – making smart decisions and never lose focus on the end product and the buyer. Find clever ways to bootstrap, no matter what your business is. Running a business is all about believing in yourself. Check out a previous post about the motivation of an entrepreneur.

If you think something is a good idea, don’t let yourself get talked out of it. Apply common sense and try not to let naysayers get to your head. If you feel something is a bad idea, keep your eye on it. To keep your business goals on track, you need to research your business idea to the max. Try not to plow ahead without taking the time to thoroughly plan and research. Be sure to trust your instincts when you want to succeed because you don’t want to overlook that first feeling of discomfort.

There are three different customers you will need to think about in relation to your idea. Purchasers – those who make the decision. Influencers – the organization who decide on the purchasing decision. End users – the person who directly interacts with your service or product.

Starting your dream company with nothing can be frightening, but it is possible with a few crafty moves and keeping your eye on the prize. Figure out where to save and how to bootstrap can mean the difference between the smell of success and the sourness of defeat. Let your natural instincts lead the way to success.
