FIVE STAR PAINTING
Founded in 2000 in Canada, Five Star Painting began as a small painting company with big aspirations. After running a successful painting operation for years, Five Star looked to the franchise model as a means to expand across North America. In late 2004, Five Star took its first step in the U.S. marketplace and made its head office in Utah county, where it still calls home. Five Star began franchising in late 2005, combining professionals that understood customer service with the Five Star franchise opportunity. Five Star focuses on delivering a Five Star job to each customer without the five star price. The unique implementation of technology and training into one of America’s oldest industries has resulted in explosive growth for the company. As of June 1, 2009, Five Star Painting has franchise operations in three countries, 23 states and provinces and 35 major markets.

Five Star Painting focuses on franchising as a means to increase growth. Franchising represents one of the largest economic drivers in the Unites States today, representing nearly nine percent of gross domestic product. CORPORATE TEAM
Scott Abbott, Chairman & CEO. Scott Abbott’s vision is for Five Star to become the #1 service franchise in North America. As CEO, Abbott focuses on the development of technology, products, services and partnerships that enable Five Star to be a leader in the service industy. Abbott earned a Master of Business Administration from the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in management from the University of Manitoba. Abbott and his businesses have been recognized with several awards for his entrepreneurship, including innovator of the year and entrepreneur of the year while in Canada.
Alexander Lawrence, Director. Alexander Lawrence is the franchise veteran at Five Star Painting, having owned and operated multiple franchise chains (both as franchisee and franchisor) over his 14 year career in franchising. Lawrence’s primary focus is the development and growth of the Five Star brand through new franchisees, partnerships and other growth opportunities that will help Five Star grow into the #1 service franchise in North America. In addition, he is an integral part of the leadership of the corporate office and its staff. Lawrence holds a bachelor’s degree in business management, as well as a Master of Business Administration. Lawrence has been recognized as one of Utah’s top 40 business people under the age of 40, and sits on the board of both his alma maters’ business schools.
Conrad Kolba, Chief Operating Officer. Through all of Five Star Painting’s changes, Conrad Kolba has remained the constant. As one of the original five founders of the business in 1997, Kolba has seen the company evolve from one shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to more than 50 franchises internationally. He has personally started two franchises – Edmonton, Alberta, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Kolba got his start in the painting industry working for his father’s property management group at the young age of 15, and has been in the industry for the past 18 years. Kolba continues to be the painting industry expert, and gives guidance and counsel to each of the franchisees.
Thomas E Hodgson, Chief Operating Officer – East, USA. Thomas E Hodgson began painting in 1993 while attending Ohio State University where he studied Business and Marketing. His passion for the business grew and he incorporated Color World House Painting, Inc. in 1997. Based in Columbus, Ohio, he spent the next 10 years improving and expanding his business into seven domestic markets. In 2007 he partnered with Five Star Painting to realize his goal of creating the largest painting franchise system in the world. Hodgson’s primary role is chief operating officer and franchise sales for the Eastern United States; his focus is development of exterior systems and direct mail advertising for all franchisees.
Chad Jones, Vice President National Accounts. Chad Jones is an original founder of Five Star Painting. His background in commercial and residential construction makes him the Five Star expert in commercial sales development and networking specialist. Jones was responsible for the rapid growth of the first corporate Five Star franchise and continues to help guide current franchisees in their commercial relationships and contract procurement. Jones is responsible for the growing network of corporate partners associated with Five Star.
Nathan Dunn, Chief Financial Officer. Nathan Dunn has 11 years of diverse management experience from owning and operating small businesses to working at the head quarters of one of the world’s most successful retailers. Nathan holds a Master of Business Administration degree and an undergraduate business degree from Brigham Young University and serves on the planning commission for Clearfield City, Utah. Dunn accepted the chief financial officer position with Five Star after seeing the company’s potential as a franchisee, and remains an owner of the Orem, Utah franchise
Paulo Teves, Chief Technology Officer. Specializing in Desktop Software Development and Project Management, Paulo has brought his skill set to Five Star to improve its in-house software systems. Software systems that were custom built for the painting industry, and for the Five Star franchise owner. Paulo holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Manitoba, and 8 years of software development and management in niche market software development.
