IFA’s VetFran Program

Franchising World March 2010

As the International Franchise Association celebrates its 50th birthday this year, it has, among others, a rewarding achievement: enabling military veterans to attain their goal of small-business ownership. IFA’s Veterans Transition Franchise Initiative has helped more than 1,500 veterans acquire small-business franchise establishments through discounts and other financial incentives.

The program, known as VetFran, which is designed to lower the up-front costs of buying a franchise, has increased its popularity as nearly 400 IFA-member companies have signed on to participate. The franchises determine the financial incentives that fit their system and voluntarily agree to offer honorably-discharged veterans a better deal than is offered to otherwise qualified investors. A discount of the initial fee is typical, but each company is free to design the financial incentive that it feels will best serve veterans’ needs. VetFran is completely voluntary and receives no government funding.
